Lilith synastry: where your shadow lands in their chart

Polite astrology checks Venus and the Moon to see if you two can share a closet in peace. Lilith synastry finds the exact degree where you lose your composure, forget your manners, and want too much.

Every birthday has its own lunar orbit. Earth sits at the shared focus, and the far end of each orbit, the apogee, is that person’s Black Moon Lilith. The orbits are drawn stretched: the real one is nearly round. Solid red marks hold for any birth time, dashed ones depend on it; hollow dots are true Lilith.

Rae’s Lilith in Theo’s chart

Mean Lilith 21°08′ Virgo · Rae’s 7th house

Right in the partner’s 7th house of marriage, partners, and open enemies, Lilith throws out tame relationship rules. The bond runs on equal-strength rivalry and direct challenge.

  • Theo’s Lilith opposite Rae’s Venus. Lilith faces Venus from across the wheel, baiting their taste, charm, and vanity. Attraction works like a dare here, and either person can still refuse it.orb 4°51′
True Lilith: 9°17′ Virgo, Rae’s 6th house · 1 contact

What Black Moon Lilith does between two charts

Black Moon Lilith isn’t a planet. It is the lunar apogee, the empty point where the Moon’s orbit swings farthest from Earth. In synastry, an empty point works like a vacuum, pulling out everything you hide from polite company: raw appetite, refusal to submit, and the urge to take the wheel before somebody takes it from you.

Small talk dies on contact. When someone’s planet touches your apogee, they look straight at the desire you were told to tone down at twelve, while your Lilith on their planet refuses to humor their nice, curated act.

The chart shows who holds which end of the wire. The Lilith person brings the taboo and the provocation. The planet person feels exposed, wanted in a sharper way, and dared to drop the performance, though the Lilith person is the one pressing the bruise.

How to read the synastry calculator

Two charts mean two directions, so the calculator runs the math both ways. First it drops your Lilith into your partner’s Placidus houses and measures aspects to their planets, then it flips the charts and tracks their Lilith through your houses and against your placements. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Both methods sit side by side: mean Lilith and true (osculating) Lilith. Mean Lilith is the averaged apogee and this site’s main method, whereas true Lilith tracks the Moon’s instantaneous orbit and swings up to about 30 degrees either side of the mean point. When mean Lilith makes a conjunction or opposition, true Lilith repeats it in only about 27% of cases, and for squares just 15–22%, which explains why another app gave you a totally different crisis.

Orbs stay tight: up to 5 degrees for conjunctions and oppositions, up to 3 degrees for squares. Because mean Lilith moves only 0.06 degree in half a day, the Lilith owner’s birth time barely shifts their degree. You still need the partner’s birth time for the house overlay, their Ascendant, and their Moon, which moves 12 to 15 degrees a day and gets left out without a clock time.

The six Lilith synastry contacts we check

Put Lilith on the Sun and you get a direct challenge to the Sun person’s pride and authority; you either respect their spine or spend the evening trying to snap it. Against the Moon, Lilith skips emotional safety and hooks straight into private cravings, leaving the Moon person stripped of their usual alibis while the Lilith person holds unfair leverage over the mood in the room.

Venus contacts are the classic obsession engine. Polite romance turns into an appetite for power and taboo, where possessiveness is the temptation, never the deal. Mars contacts skip the flowers entirely and go straight to friction, sexual competition, and a dare over who drives: Venus names the desire, Mars names the drive, and Lilith marks the urge to dictate terms, while both of you still set the boundaries.

An Ascendant conjunction, or an opposition on the Descendant, nails the shadow to the front door so the Ascendant person can’t hide their face twitch and the Lilith person becomes the mirror they can’t walk past. Then there is Lilith on Lilith, which only happens when you were born within about 45 days of each other, or about 8 years 10 months apart. You clock each other’s sharpest survival instincts across a room, and nobody has to explain their dark side because the other person already speaks the dialect.

How common Lilith contacts actually are

People treat a Lilith aspect like a rare cosmic hall pass for bad behavior. The math ruins that excuse. We simulated 20,000 couples with an age gap of up to 5 years. In 44.1% of pairs, one person’s mean Lilith touches the other’s chart, and if you count both directions it hits 64.8%.

Roughly two couples in three have Lilith active between their charts. A tight Lilith conjunction within 1 degree shows up in 6.1% of pairs, while Lilith lands in a partner’s 7th house in 8.3% of pairs and in the 8th in another 8.3%, or about one couple in twelve for each house. That makes a Lilith contact a pattern to watch, not a miracle and not a curse.

A chart names the temptation, never the outcome. Behavior matters more than any sign. If it hurts or feels unsafe, that’s not a sign to decode, it’s a reason to step back: The Hotline is at 1-800-799-7233 and thehotline.org. Read the aspect to see where the leverage sits, then keep your own keys in your own pocket.

Lilith synastry, contact by contact

648 of 1,000 couples have at least one Lilith contact, one way or the other.

One dot is one couple out of 20,000 simulated pairs, scaled to 1,000: births 1960–2005, age gap up to 5 years, US cities, mean Lilith, the calculator’s orbs (5° for conjunctions and oppositions, 3° for squares). Venus, Sun and house figures count one direction: one person’s Lilith in the other’s chart.

Questions

What is Lilith in synastry?

It tracks where one person’s Black Moon Lilith, the lunar apogee, falls in the other’s chart. That degree marks where raw attraction, taboo appetite, power struggles, and the refusal to heel get pulled into the open between two people.

How does the calculator check Lilith and Venus?

The engine measures the angle between one person’s Lilith and the other’s Venus in both directions: up to 5 degrees for a conjunction or opposition, up to 3 degrees for a square. In our simulation, the conjunction shows up in 2.7% of couples.

Do I need both birth times for Lilith synastry?

Mean Lilith moves only 0.11 degree a day, so you don’t need a birth time to get someone’s Lilith sign and degree. You do need your partner’s birth time to drop your Lilith into their houses and check their Moon and Ascendant, and your own birth time to do the reverse.

Which Lilith does the synastry calculator use?

Mean Lilith is the main method here, with true (osculating) Lilith calculated right alongside it for comparison. Asteroid Lilith (1181) and Dark Moon (Waldemath) are separate objects entirely and stay out of this calculator.

Is a Lilith contact bad for a relationship?

In our simulation, 64.8% of couples have at least one Lilith contact, so it proves neither doom nor compatibility. Handled with consent, it brings sexual honesty and sharp boundaries; left to run wild, it turns into jealousy and power games.

Plate I of V

The Moon’s orbit, from above

Earth sits at one focus of the ellipse, off center, so every month the Moon swings close and then far. The far end is the apogee. Astrologers call that empty point Black Moon Lilith: no body sits there, only the place where the Moon is farthest from us. The real orbit is nearly a circle; engravers stretch it so the two ends show.

Today the apogee points to 4°52′ Capricorn.
