How we calculate Black Moon Lilith

Most astrology sites hide their math behind vague mysticism and hope you don't check the degrees. Here is the exact astronomy we run for mean Lilith, true (osculating) Lilith, and Placidus houses.

Mean Lilith as the averaged apogee on the ecliptic

Lilith isn't a rock in space; it's the lunar apogee, the point where the Moon's orbit reaches farthest from Earth. Mean Lilith takes that elliptical orbit, smooths out short-term solar perturbations, and projects the averaged apogee onto the ecliptic. That gives you a steady point that moves forward about 40 degrees a year without retrograde loops.

Because it spends about 8.8 months in each sign and returns every 8.85 years, mean Lilith is our main method. When your chart puts mean Lilith at 18°02′ Scorpio, fixed water ruled by Mars and Pluto defines your baseline instinct. It shows the long-range defense system you rely on whenever someone tries to corner you.

True Lilith from the Moon's instantaneous orbit

The Moon's actual path gets yanked constantly by the Sun's gravity, so its instantaneous ellipse shifts every hour. True Lilith fits an osculating orbit to the Moon's exact position and velocity vector at your birth moment. That apogee swings back and forth at speeds ranging from -3.6 to +6.3 degrees per day.

Across 1508 moments from 1900 to 2100 in Swiss Ephemeris 2.10.03, mean and true Lilith land in different signs 36.2% of the time. The median gap between them is 9.8°, with 95% of gaps under 25.2° and the largest at 29.9°. In our February 18, 1999 chart, true Lilith sits at 27°45′ Libra, adding Venus-ruled cardinal air strategy to your repertoire.

Checked against Swiss Ephemeris for degree accuracy

If an app is off by half a sign, your cusp reading is worthless, so we benchmark against Swiss Ephemeris 2.10.03. Our mean Lilith calculation matches Swiss Ephemeris within 1.2 arcseconds across the test range. Our true Lilith calculation matches within 11 arcminutes, with a median error of 3 arcminutes.

Everything runs in your browser so your birth data never touches a remote server. Whether mean Lilith is at 3°39′ Capricorn or true Lilith is at 4°28′ Capricorn on October 17, 2026, the degrees hold up. When Saturn-ruled cardinal earth demands receipts, you have the exact numbers to back your chart reading.

Tropical zodiac and Placidus houses

We measure longitudes in the tropical zodiac anchored to the vernal equinox, which is standard for Western chart work. For house cusps, we calculate Placidus houses from your exact birth time and geographic coordinates. In our February 18, 1999, 7:14 AM Los Angeles example, 12°17′ Pisces rises on the 1st house cusp.

That Placidus grid places both 18°02′ Scorpio and 27°45′ Libra inside the 8th house of intimacy, debts, and shared power. Whole-sign houses would put those two points in different houses. This site uses Placidus throughout. Pinning the exact house shows where your sharpest boundary actually protects your interests.

What happens when you don't have a birth time

When you leave the birth time blank, we don't invent a fake noon Ascendant and pretend you have a 10th house placement. Placidus houses turn every couple of hours, so guessing a clock time only feeds you bad data. Instead, we omit the house and calculate your sign position cleanly.

You still get a reliable mean Lilith sign because it changes sign within a day on 0.3% of days. True Lilith crosses a sign boundary within a day on 7.3% of days, so without a time we show the range true Lilith covered on your birthday. Knowing whether your shadow runs on Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius fire or Mercury-ruled Virgo earth still gives you your edge.

The check, in numbers

Our calculation against Swiss Ephemeris 2.10.03 on 1508 moments 1900–2100:

PointTypical gap99% of momentsLargest gap
Mean Lilith0.3″1.0″1.2″
True Lilith3.3′8.5′11.3′

How far apart the two methods land, by the same reference: different signs in 36.2% of moments, a median gap of 9.8°, 95% of gaps under 25.2°, the largest 29.9°. True Lilith moves from -3.6 to +6.3 degrees per day.

Questions

Why do you use mean Lilith as the default sign?

Mean Lilith filters out short-term orbital wobble to show the steady baseline of the lunar apogee. We still display true Lilith right beside it so you never have to guess why another chart differs.

How do you calculate Lilith return dates?

We find when transiting mean Lilith returns to your natal ecliptic longitude every 8.85 years. That happens at ages about 8.8, 17.7, 26.5, 35.4, and 44.2.

Why do you use Placidus houses instead of whole-sign houses?

Placidus tracks the actual diurnal arc of degrees rising at your latitude and birth minute. That precision shows whether a 9.8° gap between mean and true Lilith stays inside one house or splits.
