8th house synastry: who is more obsessed, and what the chart actually counts
8th house synastry happens when one person’s planet lands inside the other person’s 8th house. Neither seat wins an obsession contest: the house person feels a presence inside the part of life nobody else gets let into, while the planet person feels the pull to go deeper. Run both birth charts below to see where the weight actually sits.

Rae and Theo: who lands in whose 8th house
Rae: February 18, 1999 · 7:14 AM · Los Angeles. Theo: September 25, 1997 · 6:20 PM · New York
8th house
Theo’s 8th house holds two of Rae’s planets. Rae’s holds one of Theo’s planets.
Both 8th houses hold heat at the same time. Leverage runs both ways, leaving neither seat any room to fake indifference.
12th house
Theo’s 12th house holds one of Rae’s planets. Rae’s holds none of Theo’s planets.
At least one body slips into a 12th house blind spot. Unspoken habits and private fog sit underneath what both seats say out loud.
Rae’s planets in Theo’s houses
Sun29°30′ Aquarius · Theo’s 12th house, 16°17′ in
Without meaning to announce a secret, the Sun person lights up a blind spot that the house person keeps offstage and out of everyday conversation.

Venus26°00′ Pisces · Theo’s 1st house
Mars8°02′ Scorpio · Theo’s 8th house, 1°59′ inon the cusp: 1°59′ from the start of the house
Friction hits an exposed nerve: the Mars person pushes for heat and candor, leaving the house person wide awake and provoked inside their own private territory.
Pluto10°20′ Sagittarius · Theo’s 9th house
Lilith18°02′ Scorpio · Theo’s 8th house, 11°59′ in
Taboo recognizes its match on sight as the Lilith person skips polite pretense and the house person feels their sharpest private edge met head-on.

What an 8th house overlay actually puts on the table
One person’s planet drops into the other person’s 8th house. Astrology splits this contact into two seats: the house person owns the 8th house, and the planet person owns the Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars, Pluto, or Black Moon Lilith that lands there. Forget compatibility scores. You are looking at whose private territory just took on a guest.
Sex and intimacy live in the 8th house alongside merging, taboo, power, secrets, and what two people share and owe each other. Casual conversation dies fast once a planet parks here. At 1 AM on a Tuesday, you hear yourself answering a blunt question about an ex that you dodged with your last three partners. Small talk stops working.
Checking either direction requires the house person’s exact birth time. Houses turn every couple of hours, so an unknown birth time erases the house lines completely. Missing the planet person’s birth time barely moves the needle, except for a fast-moving Moon. Precision beats guessing at dark chemistry: check whose 8th house actually holds a planet.
Who is more obsessed in 8th house synastry, by the geometry
Everybody runs this check wanting a verdict on who is losing more sleep. Geometry hands back two distinct kinds of fixation instead of a trophy. Exposure lands on the house person, because someone is suddenly standing right inside their most unguarded territory. Magnetism pulls at the planet person, drawing them to provoke, want, or dig past the house person’s surface.
Planet counts show where the gravity sits, never whose love is bigger. In 6.0% of couples, the layout turns lopsided: two or more planets crowd one person’s 8th house while zero land in the other’s. Picture one person typing and deleting the same three-word text for twenty minutes while the other orders takeout without thinking twice. Look at our sample pair, Rae (February 18, 1999, 7:14 AM, Los Angeles) and Theo (September 25, 1997, 6:20 PM, New York). Rae’s Mars at 8°02′ Scorpio sits 1°59′ inside Theo’s 8th house right at the cusp, and Rae’s mean Lilith at 18°02′ Scorpio sits 11°59′ deep. Theo’s Venus at 15°57′ Scorpio lands 21°24′ inside Rae’s 8th house. Both 8th houses hold heat, though Theo hosts two bodies and Rae hosts one deep Venus.

Which planet in their 8th house lands hardest
Sun in the partner’s 8th house appears in 8.3% of couples, one direction. Noon glare hits a secret life. Basic identity from the Sun person shines straight onto things the house person keeps off the record; read the Sun in the 8th house page for why pride and privacy collide.
Moon in the partner’s 8th house also hits 8.3% one way. Need and instinct tangle directly with raw exposure, leaving nowhere to hide a sour mood over breakfast. Check the Moon in the 8th house page for how everyday closeness strips away emotional armor.
Venus in the partner’s 8th house lands in 8.3% of charts one way. Easy charm evaporates fast, giving attraction an edge of hunger and what you owe each other emotionally. Our Venus in the 8th house page breaks down why desire stops playing polite.
Mars in the partner’s 8th house leads the pack slightly at 8.6% one way. Heat and friction press straight on an unguarded nerve, turning an ordinary pause across a dinner table into a dare. Visit the Mars in the 8th house page for that standoff.
Pluto in the partner’s 8th house shows up in 7.8% of pairs one way, and birth years do most of the heavy lifting. Crawling at 2.2 to 2.6 degrees a year, Pluto barely shifts between peers; when the house person’s natal Pluto already sits in their own 8th house, a near-age partner’s Pluto lands there too in 79.3% of cases. The Pluto in the 8th house page separates generational overlap from real leverage.
Mean Lilith — the lunar apogee, the far point of the Moon’s orbit, an empty point — lands in the partner’s 8th house in 7.9% of couples. Forbidden appetite recognizes its match without an apology. Go to our Lilith in the 8th house synastry page for the full read, and know exactly which point is turning up the heat.
Mutual 8th house synastry: when the pull runs both ways
Mutual 8th house synastry happens when at least one of the six bodies lands in your 8th house and at least one of yours lands in theirs. Across 20,000 simulated couples, 14.1% hit this two-way layout — about one pair in seven. Rae and Theo sit right inside this bracket.
One-way overlays split the roles: one person hosts the contact, the other supplies it. Two-way overlays strip both people of that buffer at the exact same time. Leverage sits in both sets of hands, so an offhand silence on a drive home or an unanswered question about last weekend turns into a quiet standoff where neither person wants to flinch first.
Detached cool fails completely here. Read the mutual 8th house synastry page for what happens when both charts hold real stakes in the dark. Say the true thing first instead of waiting for them to blink.
When nothing lands in either 8th house
Running the birth data and getting zeroes across both 8th houses happens all the time. Exactly 38.7% of couples — more than one pair in three — have none of these six bodies in either 8th house. Checked in one direction alone, 37.7% land at least one planet in a partner’s 8th, and 9.7% land two or more. Across either direction, 61.3% get a hit, leaving a huge share of couples completely clear of the 8th.
Zero hits is a full answer, never a romantic dud. Wanting someone badly does not require an 8th house pileup. Look at Rae and Theo outside the 8th: Rae’s Moon and Venus sit in Theo’s 1st house, while Theo’s Sun and Lilith sit in Rae’s 7th house. Two people can argue over who hogged the coffee maker on Sunday morning without turning it into a referendum on betrayal, because attraction runs cleanly through the 1st, 5th, and 7th houses every day.
Clear 8th houses spare you unnecessary power struggles. Intimacy gets built by choice instead of compulsion.
The 12th house, the other hidden territory
People confuse 8th house heat with 12th house fog, so this calculator checks both. Inside the 8th house, both seats feel the tension and know what is at stake. Solitude, secrets, self-undoing, behind-the-scenes habits, and blind spots belong to the 12th house. One person trips over a habit the other refuses to see in themselves — like swearing you aren’t jealous while rereading a three-week-old message thread in the bathroom.
Across the simulated couples, 62.0% have at least one of the six bodies in a 12th house either way (38.5% one direction, 15.1% mutual, 38.0% none either way). Single-planet hits one way stay steady: Sun 8.5%, Moon 8.1%, Venus 8.5%, Mars 8.6%, Pluto 7.7%, and mean Lilith 8.2%. In our sample pair, Rae’s Sun at 29°30′ Aquarius sits in Theo’s 12th house while Theo puts nothing in Rae’s 12th.
Read the 12th house synastry page when a connection feels less like a power struggle and more like sleepwalking. Naming a blind spot stops you from arguing with a ghost.
How this calculator counts, and why another chart disagrees
Placidus houses run this tool (switching to Porphyry above the polar circles) right inside your browser; no birth data gets sent anywhere. Six bodies per person get checked: Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars, Pluto, and mean Lilith. Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune stay out of the count because they aren’t what people mean when they ask who is obsessed.
Another site showing your Venus in their 7th instead of their 8th points to two culprits. House systems come first: whole-sign houses snap every sign border into a cusp, moving placements around even while you stare at two tabs open side by side at midnight. Borderline degrees come second. Anything within 2 degrees of a cusp gets flagged here, because a birth time off by a few minutes shifts the line. In our sample data, 13.2% of 8th house hits and 13.9% of 12th house hits sat inside that 2-degree zone — right where Rae’s Mars lands, 1°59′ inside Theo’s 8th.
Leaving out the planet person’s birth time also blurs the Moon. Moving 12 to 15 degrees a day, the Moon can sit 6 to 7 degrees either side of its noon spot and cross into the next house, which the calculator flags. True (osculating) Lilith swings far from mean Lilith and gives other houses too. Read the exact degrees before spiralling over a label.
Questions
Who feels 8th house synastry more, the house person or the planet person?
Both seats feel it from opposite angles, and the chart never measures whose love is bigger. Exposure lands on the house person, who registers a sharp presence inside their private arena of sex, power, and shared stakes. Magnetism pulls on the planet person, drawing them to press into the house person’s guarded life.
What does it mean if my planets are in his 8th house?
Your planets in their 8th house put you in the planet seat and your partner in the house seat. Ordinary traits of yours wake up their private themes of intimacy, taboo, and emotional stakes without much effort. They register you in an unguarded corner of their life, while you feel pulled to dig past their surface.
Is 8th house synastry always obsessive?
No placement forces obsession, and 61.3% of couples have at least one of these six bodies in an 8th house either way without losing their heads. An 8th house overlay sets up a pattern of intense privacy, magnetic focus, and power themes. Acting on that pull with respect or walking away stays your choice.
How common is 8th house synastry?
Across 20,000 simulated couples checking Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars, Pluto, and mean Lilith, 61.3% had at least one body in an 8th house either way, while 38.7% had none. Any single body lands in one partner’s 8th house between 7.8% and 8.6% of the time, or about one couple in twelve. Mutual 8th house overlays appear in 14.1% of pairs.
Do I need both birth times for an 8th house synastry calculator?
The house person’s birth time is mandatory, since houses turn every couple of hours and disappear without a clock time. Missing the planet person’s birth time leaves five of the six bodies steady enough to read. Only the Moon moves 12 to 15 degrees a day, earning a borderline flag whenever noon leaves it near a cusp.
